About MTG Judo Club

MTG Judo Club was formed in 2019 by Maurice Mirabito (6th Dan) and Jerome Wahl (2nd Dan), but the story of the club goes back much further than that.

For more than 33 years, the club was known as Y-West Judo Club, based at the YMCA Jamboree Heights, where Sensei Maurice Mirabito dedicated his life to teaching judo and supporting thousands of kids, families, and adults across Brisbane’s western suburbs. To many in the judo community, he wasn’t just Sensei Maurie – he was “Maurie The Great.”

In 2019, the club moved to Corinda State School and was renamed MTG Judo Club, carrying forward Maurie’s nickname and the values he stood for: respect, community, and judo for everyone.

In 2022, Jake Mirabito (2nd Dan), Maurie’s son, rejoined the club to help continue the MTG legacy alongside Jerome, ensuring the club remained true to its roots while continuing to grow with the next generation.

In April 2023, MTG Judo Club relocated to its current home at the Corinda Bowls Club, where we train in a fully air-conditioned facility and lay out a 120 m² mat area for each class, with plenty of seating for parents and visitors.

MTG Judo Club is, and always has been, a community club. We exist to serve our local area through the teachings of judo, developed by Jigoro Kano, and guided by the principles of the Judo Moral Code. More than techniques or grades, we focus on building good people – confident, respectful, and supportive of one another, both on and off the mat.
